Duck, duck, duck…
Well, I have had a pretty good history with just about everything blogging and I think I have finally settled.
First, I started with my own phpbb message board modded to my liking to be a journal right here at Ludsville.net. phpbb was a php/MySQL based open source web application designed for dynamic and customizable message boards.
Being an application built for message boards, rather than blogs, it obviously lacked some of the community oriented features of more popular sites such as DiaryLand. Of course, there is no better feature than being in complete control, which is the non-missing link in this story.
In order to promote my blog by joining and participating certain communities and friend networks, I registered for LiveJournal. I was to post on LJ synchronously with my original “main” blog except in situations exclusive to LJ. That was until I found that LJ was almost fully customizable (aesthetically at least) and I abandoned my baby.
Following the same trend, Myspace came along with something a little different from LJ. Though blogging was almost as big a part of Myspace as it was a part of LJ, Myspace also found room to add more, more dynamic, and more interactive “about me” content. By now, my blogging had gone from information to communication and I was more interested in networking with people and communicating to them either directly or indirectly, publicly or privately. So, as before, I joined one fully intending to never really leave the other behind. Again, full synchronization was intended, but not maintained.
Myspace, however, was easily defeatable. Where is the control? There is none! Zilch! So, some how, some way, I found WordPress, a php/MySQL based open source web application designed for dynamic and customizable (sound familiar?) blogging. WordPress has been my salvation, taking me out of the heresy that is the far inferior trendy blogging sites.
I know what you are thinking right now (actually, I don’t, but after I say it you will be thinking it, so it’s close enough) - how does he know that he won’t just change his mind again in a year or two? I’m glad I asked. Well, first of all, this is where I began. This has always been my love. All throughout my affairs with other methods, I have always played and dabbled in the background with php/MySQL, even if it was just reading. A deep passion for complete programming control – as apposed to limited control of color schemes – ensures that even if I ever did leave WordPress, I would be back eventually, even if only to it’s core, php/MySQL. Furthermore, I would think that I have gone full circle. I have tasted of other bowls of porridge (yes, this includes Blogger, Xanga, DiaryLand, etc.) and have come right back to this one because it is just right.
Finally, I find that the transition has been much different this time. In earlier changes, the former blogging method was always intended to be primary with the new method beings secondary and only existing for some specific purpose. The switch was slow and gradual. Here, I am more than eager to leave Myspace in the dust (while I still use it and Facebook to keep in touch with certain people) and jump, head first, into WordPress. I have even developed an (almost) original theme.
Yes, it seems that I am here to stay. My new home in an old location. There’s no place like Ludsville.net.
…GOOSE!
